This gorgeous Pink King Protea was growing in my front garden, when I snapped a stunning reference pic of it.
 
I wanted to capture the dark depths of the background, so began by covering the canvas with deep, dark, blues and greens. I always start with there, and work my way towards the light. The last colour I often tinish with is white, where I am creating highlights and reflections.
